Family Centered Pain control

Discuss indication, risks and benefits of the procedure or source of infant's pain.

Discuss pain assessment and control measures.

Invite parent to comfort their infant and hold the infant if possible.

    Parent presence, voice, and holding reduce neonatal pain scores.

    Parent presence can reduce parent anxiety.

    Swaddling, prone positioning and  mother's milk also reduce neonatal pain scores.

Ensure parent is seated where they can see but not be in the way of the procedure.

If indicated, ensure parent has a knowledgeable staff guide to help interpret the experience for them.
